Lighting Systems comprises of two main systems:
Both of these lighting systems are to be integrated together in designing the lighting for any space.
Earlier, we discussed “Primary Lighting Systems”. Now we will move on with the discussion on Secondary Lighting Systems.
Secondary Lighting Systems
1. Accent lighting- 15 times more than task lighting
2. Effect lighting- no functional value
3. Decorative lighting
4. Architectural lighting
5. Mood lighting
Accent lighting
It provides directional and aimed lighting to create spots and to throw light exactly and precisely where it is needed resulting in different brightness, different depth of colour or the surface or an intricate play of light and shadow on a beautiful object to help accentuate its form.
Effect lighting
It is provided to actually create an attractive feature with light itself lighting interest through light rather than the object illuminated by it.
Lighting technique involves use of ceiling recessed downlights to create attractive lighting patterns
Decorative lighting
It is an art of providing attractive luminaire or lamps to provide points of interest in the interiors. Ex. Chandelier.
Architectural lighting/structural lighting
It has a close correlation with the architecture of the interior
Method of providing light making use of cornice valences coves, canopies, soffits.
Ex. Architectural façade light (to hide the source from the view)
Mood lighting

It is a possibility to switch or dim in such a way as to create a mood or ambience that is keeping with the activity taking place.
